Mariachi Music

In September of 2009 St. Gregory College Preparatory high school hosted a mariachi band by the name of "La Bamba." This group travels around to different schools to raise awareness about mariachi music and how much history is behind it. Before they perform they give a short speech about the origins of mariachi and how the Mexican people feel about. They explain that Mariachi music is a unique genre of music considered by the Mexican people to be traditional, spiritual, and cultural. Mariachi music has been around since the 19th century. Traditionally trumpets, violins, acoustic guitars, vihuela's (a high-pitched five-string guitar), and sometimes harp, are used to produce the music. "La Bamba"has now visited 100 schools since they formed in 2003. They are continuing to provide knowledge and fun for all students who see them perform.
